Frequently Asked Questions
High-impact regional events bring EST members and suppliers together to build relationships, explore trading opportunities and strengthen independent hardware retail
Independent hardware retailers continue to operate in a demanding trading environment shaped by cost pressures, product availability, intense competition and the ongoing need to protect margins. Within this environment, the strength of a retailer’s supplier relationships and buying network can make a meaningful difference.
Elite Star Trading (EST) supports its members through negotiated supplier arrangements, industry relationships and practical opportunities that help retailers remain informed, connected and competitive. EST’s annual regional trade shows are an important part of this approach, creating a focused setting in which members and suppliers can meet face to face, discuss products and opportunities, and build stronger commercial relationships.
The 2026 EST Regional Trade Shows were held in Johannesburg, KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town, with strong support recorded across all three regions. Each event brought together independent retailers, EST representatives and participating suppliers for a day centred on business engagement, networking and interaction.
Bringing the hardware retail community together
The regional format makes the trade shows more accessible to members in different parts of South Africa. It also gives suppliers the opportunity to engage directly with retailers operating in distinct local markets.
For EST members, these events provide dedicated time away from the day-to-day demands of running a store. Retailers can speak directly to supplier representatives, ask questions, discuss product ranges and identify opportunities relevant to their own businesses. Suppliers, in turn, gain valuable contact with the independent retail market and the people making purchasing decisions at store level.
This direct engagement remains important in an industry where business is built on trust, responsiveness and long-term relationships. A catalogue, email or sales sheet can communicate product information, but an in-person conversation allows both parties to address specific needs, exchange feedback and explore opportunities in greater depth.
Regional AGMs support strong attendance and focused engagement
EST’s regional annual general meetings formed part of the trade-show programme and were held during the morning at each event. This scheduling created a concentrated period of retailer attendance before and after the AGM presentations, helping to maintain activity and engagement across the exhibition floor.
Combining the AGM and trade show also made productive use of members’ time. Retailers could take part in important group discussions and receive relevant updates while also meeting suppliers in the same venue.
The format allowed suppliers to have meaningful one-on-one conversations with buyers throughout the day. Rather than encouraging passive attendance, the programme was structured to promote active participation and give exhibitors and visitors a clear reason to engage.
Digital interaction encourages a full tour of the show
To encourage members to visit every exhibitor, EST introduced a digital interaction using QR-code scanning. Retailers were required to have their individual QR codes scanned at each supplier stand, creating a record of their visits across the exhibition floor.
Members who completed the full circuit and were scanned at every participating stand were automatically entered into a prize draw. This added an interactive and competitive element to the event while supporting an important commercial objective: giving each exhibitor an opportunity to meet participating retailers.
The prize draws took place during the afternoon, and qualifying entrants had to be present to win. This helped sustain attendance and activity through to the later part of the day, giving suppliers more time to engage with members and keeping the atmosphere lively across the floor.
Strong supplier support adds to the experience
Participating suppliers supported the regional events with a wide selection of sponsored prizes. These included useful retail, trade and lifestyle products that created excitement while reflecting the industries represented at the shows.
At the Johannesburg event, prizes included a Jaguar electronic safe, an Einhell battery lawnmower, a Matweld inverter welder with helmet, an Alva gas heater, Flash Harry Slurry Seal, an Africa Tanks 200-litre water tank, a Gentech battery generator, Ruwag and Tolsen toolboxes, and Ingco tool kits.
The winners of these prizes were returned to the draw for the headline prize, giving every winner a further opportunity to take home the major award.
At the Durban event, prizes were generously donated by Fragram, Ingco, Matus, Ruwag (Harden), Tolsen, Alva, Africa Tanks and DPI Plastics. The broad supplier support demonstrated the value that participating brands place on engaging directly with EST’s independent retail members.
Cape Town suppliers also contributed a range of lucky-draw prizes, building anticipation ahead of the region’s headline forklift draw.
Forklift draws create memorable moments in every region
The main forklift draws proved to be highlights of the 2026 regional events, producing memorable results in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.
In Johannesburg, the first store drawn was not present and therefore could not claim the prize. A redraw was held, with EH Hassim Hardware emerging as the winner. The result carried an unexpected twist: the same business had reportedly been drawn in a previous year but had not been present to collect the prize. In 2026, the store was there to secure the win.
Durban delivered another coincidence. The winner of the Africa Tanks 2 500-litre water tank also won the Bobcat forklift, making it an especially successful day for Jock Morrison. The store was represented by Naveen Naidu and Senzo Misuro, with Senzo’s name selected in the draw.
In Cape Town, Edward Stanley Rowland of Heddle Hardware won the region’s forklift prize, concluding the three regional draws on a celebratory note.
Active participation creates greater value
The success of a trade show depends on the quality of the interactions it creates. EST’s 2026 format was designed to encourage retailers to explore the full exhibition, speak to suppliers and remain engaged throughout the event.
The QR-code activity, regional AGM scheduling and afternoon prize draws all contributed to this objective. Together, these elements created a practical balance between structured group business, individual supplier discussions and the excitement of the competitions.
For suppliers, the events provided direct access to an audience of independent hardware retailers. For members, the shows offered an efficient way to meet multiple suppliers, strengthen relationships and investigate opportunities that could support their stores.
Supporting stronger independent retailers
EST’s regional trade shows reflect the group’s broader commitment to strengthening independent retail through collaboration. Negotiated buying opportunities are central to a voluntary buying group, but sustainable retail competitiveness also depends on access to information, supplier support, relevant networks and opportunities for direct engagement.
By creating a platform for retailers and suppliers to connect in person, EST helps turn commercial relationships into practical conversations. Members can raise questions, share market feedback and gain a clearer understanding of the products and support available to them. Suppliers also benefit from deeper insight into the realities, needs and opportunities within the independent retail sector.
The 2026 regional events once again showed the value of bringing the industry together with a clear commercial purpose. Strong attendance, active supplier participation and sustained retailer engagement helped make each show productive, relevant and memorable.
